Oireachtas Rince na Cruinne 2001
The World
Championships 2001
It is with great regret that we announce that, due to the
outbreak of Foot
and Mouth Disease in Great Britain and fears of it's
spread to Ireland,
Oireachtas Rince na Cruinne - The World Irish Dancing
Championships - will
not now be held at Easter 2001. The spread of the
disease from Britain to
Northern France and the fact that approximately 35% of
the participants
would have come from Britain were major determing factors
in our making this
decision. It was widely felt, not only among An
Coimisiún's Irish
delegates, but among delegates from England and Scotland
too, that, should
even one case of Foot and Mouth Disease be confirmed in
Ireland following
the holding of the World Championships, the good name of
irish Dancing and
all who love and practise it would be tainted. To
all those people who,
like ourselves, will be bitterly disappointed by this
decision we offer our
sincere regrets. The wider question of whether the
even is deferred to
another date or cancelled is one which can only be
answered following a full
debate at a meeting of An Coimisiún when meetings are
resumed.

All Scotland Championships
cancelled
Due to a
double booking this years the All Scotland Championships
have had to be cancelled. On the Saturday of the
competition one of the Main halls has been booked for a
wedding even although we have had it booked as an ongoing
event for the last two years. It is a bitter blow on
account of the World Championships also being
off. We always have a strong outside entry as well as
local and in case people have made provisional
arrangements we felt an early notice was for the best. We
had been offered another hall but we felt it was
not suitable to timetable it. Again we offer our
apologies to all our regular dancers and teachers who
support the Feis and can assure them it will go ahead
next year, maybe not in the same venue.
