Hair and Accessories

Managing hair and more!

Consider your options

Getting your hair just right for your next feis is just one of the important things you have to think about. If you are new to Irish dancing it is worth spending some time exploring the different options you have to make sure you end up with the best hairstyle you can possibly get.

Do you want to go natural or wear a wig?

This is the question lots of people struggle with. We’ve created a page that looks at the pros and cons of each course of action, so make sure you pay a visit to find out more. You may find you start by styling your own hair and then move on to buy a wig later. The choice is yours.

Incidentally if you do want to wear a wig you should try and find a company that sells wigs specifically for Irish dancing. They will have a wide range of wigs that are just suitable for this very purpose, instead of more general styles and designs.

Hair and accessories

Don’t forget the accessories

Many female dancers wear a tiara of some kind to make their hair look even more beautiful.

You might also elect to wear hair clips to help keep your hair in place (whether it is a wig or your own hair) while you dance.

There are lots of online suppliers that will provide you with everything you need to get the results you want.

Whatever you decide to use, be sure to give your accessories a practical test or two before you wear them to a real feis.

Put them through a couple of practice sessions to see whether those new clips stay firmly in place, and whether that tiara really looks as good as you thought it would.

What do other dancers do?

You can’t usually tell from photos whether a dancer is wearing a wig or whether the head of ringlets they are sporting is completely natural. However it’s a great idea to surf the internet to find as many pictures of Irish dancers as you can. This will enable you to see how they do their hair and how the combination of the style, the tiara and any other clips that are used come together.

The idea is to provide support and to create an attractive style that looks good both at the start and the end of the feis. Since the feis is a very energetic, long and tiring day, it makes sense that you should work hard to achieve a hairstyle that will last.

Keeping everything stored safely

Even if you don’t opt to go down the wig route, you’ll still have hair items to keep safely stored. It’s a good idea to keep everything together because you will be able to find it easily whenever you need it for the next feis.

The last thing you’ll need is to be running around trying to find your Magik Wands for curling your hair, or wondering where on earth your tiara is!

Practice makes perfect: "The only way that outstanding dancers reach the ultimate level of experience and skill is to continually practice. If you only ever practice at dance class you need to devote some time in your regular schedule to practice at home as well. If you find it difficult to inspire yourself to practice alone..." Did You Know?

A Ceili dance is a folk dance that is well known in Ireland. While there are competitions that exist for people who are experienced at performing Ceili dances, many people take part in them just for fun. Mind you, they can be good for exercising and getting fit too, since some of them can go on for quite a while. Read More...
