To Wig or Not to Wig?

It's all part of the presentation

We look at the pros and cons

Whenever you see a picture of someone who is taking part in a feis you are immediately drawn to their outfit and their hair. In a sense their hair really is part of the outfit, since it completes the overall picture you see.

But the big question – and one you probably ask yourself when you see these pictures – is whether or not you should wear a wig or go with your own hair instead. There are pros and cons to both avenues, so if you are undecided at present, the following information should help you to make up your mind.

Styling your own hair

To wig or not to wig?

For some dancers, there is nothing to compete with styling their own hair. If you choose to do this you will need to ensure you have the right tools to create the ringlets that are among the most popular styles at present. You (or more likely your parent!) must also be prepared to spend a few hours the night before the feis to put all the curlers in.

Many dancers will wash and dry their hair the night before and then insert all the curlers and sleep in them. This ensures the best possible result. As you can see this method is very time consuming and the best results are only really achieved after a lot of practice. You also have to be sure you don’t get caught in any rain showers otherwise the whole effect will be ruined.

Wearing a wig

This is simpler but a lot more expensive. If you want to get a top quality wig you must be prepared to pay for it. In addition it makes sense to have at least two wigs so you have a spare in case anything should happen to the one you normally wear.

The big advantage of wearing a wig is that you don’t have to spend hours making sure your own hair is styled in the proper manner. You will have to spend some time looking for the best wig supplier and the best quality and colour of wig to begin with. But once you have found it you will have everything you need. It is easy to see why some dancers opt for this solution.

What would you do?

Whichever route you decide to go down, the most important thing is to be sure you dedicate your efforts to getting the best possible result you can. This might mean spending hours styling your hair if you want to create authentic ringlets, or it might mean trying and testing various wigs before you find the right one.

Only you will know which solution is right for you. But if you hate sitting for hours patiently waiting for all those Magik Wand curlers to be put in your hair, you’ll know which solution is going to be the best one.

Just be sure that if you do choose the wigs, you go for nothing but the best in order to get an authentically realistic look.

Did You Know?

A Ceili dance is a folk dance that is well known in Ireland. While there are competitions that exist for people who are experienced at performing Ceili dances, many people take part in them just for fun. Mind you, they can be good for exercising and getting fit too, since some of them can go on for quite a while. Read More...
