Designing a Dress

How we designed my dress

Designing your dress is a very difficult thing to do!
First of all you want to come up with a design that is special to you so that nobody else will have a dress quite like yours. However, you still want it to be traditionally Irish! It is therefore easy to fall into the trap of using the 'standard' designs of Claddagh and Tara brooches that you see everywhere. My Mum and Dad thought it was a good idea for us all to discuss it, especially as they had to pay for it!
Mum and I unfortunately had different ideas of the basic colours, and in the end agreed to use both our ideas. As it turned out I think this was probably a better idea anyway!

My Dad made up the basic designs for my dress on the computer and then we went down to place in Colchester that was called Celtic Image where a very nice man called Paul sat down with him and they put together a really nice dress design between them.
Meanwhile Mum and I discussed materials and colours etc. with the very helpful ladies and the man called Martin who all made me feel very special. They were all very friendly and really seemed to enjoy making the dresses. I was shown how they make them and saw several dresses being put together.
The Basic Designs
The design my Dad has used consists of my Mum's family crest -

The O'Mahony's of Tralee
(some of you might know of my Uncle Garry who was a famous Gaelic Football Goalkeeper who played for the All - Ireland winning Kerry team in the mid 1950's!)

and my Dad's family crest -
The Amos's from England
(nobody well known there, I'm afraid!)
coupled with various Celtic knotwork and
Claddagh (or Claddagh) designs.

The Brath (or cape) has the crest of Tra Li (Tralee) in Co.Kerry, Eire, where my Mum was born and all my family, including my Nan, still live.
It is based on the design on the memorial to the
'Rose of Tralee' that stands on the Green in the
centre of Tralee.

The designs are based on these pictures but the man at Celtic Image has made them look amazing!
I should be getting the dress very soon so check back in a week or so for more info and perhaps some pictures.
